Safety Report: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Bearded Dragons, USA

1 week ago source cdc.gov

Outbreak

United States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to bearded dragons. The outbreak has so far resulted in 15 reported illnesses across nine states, with four individuals hospitalized. The investigation reveals that 60% of the affected individuals are children under the age of five.

Bearded dragons, while popular as pets, can carry Salmonella germs in their droppings, even if they appear healthy and clean. This poses a significant risk to children under five, adults over 65, and those with weakened immune systems, who are more likely to contract a serious illness from the germs reptiles carry.

The agency advises consumers to wash their hands thoroughly after handling these reptiles or anything in their environment, as Salmonella can be contracted by touching the mouth or food after contact with the reptile or its surroundings. Businesses dealing with bearded dragons are urged to educate customers about the potential health risks and how to stay safe.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
