Honda has announced a recall of certain 2013 Accord Sedan models due to a defect in the drive shaft. The issue, which affects vehicles with 4-cylinder engines and continuously variable transmissions, could lead to corrosion and potential driveshaft failure. The recall involves vehicles distributed in salt-belt states in the United States.THE AFFECTED VEHICLES:
- Make: Honda
- Model: Accord
- Model Year: 2013
- Body Style: 4-Door
- Type: Light Vehicles
- Powertrain: Gas
- Engine/Transmission: Only 4-cylinder engines with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
- Descriptive Info: Only CVT-equipped 4-cylinder models are affected. The recall population was determined based on manufacturing and vehicle registration records. The production range reflects all possible vehicles that could experience the issue.
- Production Dates (MM/DD/YYYY): Started on 07/17/2012 and Ended on 02/26/2013
DESCRIPTION OF THE ISSUE:
What is the problem?
A specific lubricant used during the assembly process has been found to speed up the breakdown of the protective layer on the drive shafts. In regions where roads are treated with de-icing chemicals (commonly in salt-belt states), this can lead to buildup and eventual corrosion of the drive shafts.
What is the safety concern?
If the drive shaft becomes corroded, it may fracture during high-torque situations. This could result in a sudden loss of propulsion or, if the parking brake isn’t engaged, the vehicle could unintentionally move, raising the chances of a crash or injury.
What caused it?
The issue stems from the use of an assembly lubricant that contributes to faster wear of the protective coating on the drive shafts. This makes the components more vulnerable to damage from road debris and corrosion caused by exposure to salt-based de-icing agents.
The recall was initiated on July 1, 2025, and is classified as a safety recall. The issue was identified through manufacturing and vehicle registration records. Notifications to dealers began on June 20, 2025, with owner notifications scheduled to start on August 11, 2025.
If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enable better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
