The outage was first reported just after 1:30 pm west of Prairie Street affecting most of the commercial corridors on West Sixth Ave. and Industrial Road. Around 800 customers were affected. The cause was due to an equipment malfunction on a switch the area.

As of 6:30 p.m., close to 3,000 Emporia customers lost electricity, the Evergy website reported. A separate outage led to about 240 customers in the dark in the Allen-Americus area, where several power poles broke in the wind.

About 1,700 Emporians are without power on the east side of town Saturday. According to Evergy's Outage map, 1,717 customers currently out of service. Outages have been reported from Commercial Street and everything east.
Evergy said power should be restored by mid-afternoon.
