A power outage spanning across multiple North and East Shore neighborhoods Sunday evening was caused by a defective underground cable that sparked a manhole fire. Nearly 5,000 customers were without power as of 6:45 p.m. The outage primarily affected Sunnyside and portions of West Brighton and Castleton Corners, the Con Edison outage map showed.
