Upwards of 1,000 homes and businesses were without power from south Rome to Westmoreland Friday afternoon due to a transformer fire on Martin Street, according to city and National Grid officials. Rome Fire Department officials said they were dispatched to a transformer fire on Martin Street, near Mill and Anthony streets, at about 2:15 p.m. Friday. And National Grid reported up to 1,131 customers without power stretching down the Route 233 corridor from south Rome to just north of the Village of Westmoreland.
