FDA Advise to not Feed Certain Lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Products due to E. coli and Salmonella, United States

5 months ago source fda.gov

United States

Arrow Reliance, Inc. is advising to not use specific lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Products due to contamination with E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella. The affected products were distributed online in the United States through a subscription service and may still be in consumers' freezers.

AFFECTED PRODUCTS:

PRODUCT: Darwin's Natural Pet Products, BioLogics All-Natural and Grain Free, Beef Recipe for Dogs
- Lot 10662
- MFG Date: May 30, 2024

PRODUCT: Darwin's Natural Pet Products, BioLogics All-Natural and Grain Free, Chicken Recipe for Dogs
- Lot 10683
- MFG date: June 05, 2024

PRODUCT: Darwin's Natural Pet Products, Natural Selections Duck Recipe for Dogs
- Lot 10638
- MFG date: May 22, 2024

The product was distributed in frozen 2-pound packages made of white and clear plastic, each containing four individual units. The BioLogics beef and chicken varieties feature orange labels, while the Natural Selections duck variety has blue labels. The lot codes can be found on the front of the package, located on the lower left unit.

The contamination was identified because a third-party testing detected the contamination following a 2024 incident where a child became ill. According to complaints submitted to the FDA, the family's dog—fed exclusively on Darwin's pet food—started vomiting a day before the child's illness. While the child reportedly did not handle the contaminated dog food directly, they had close contact with the dog. This suggests that the child's exposure to E. coli O157:H7 could have occurred through interaction with the dog itself or contact with surfaces or objects contaminated by the dog's waste.
