An E. coli outbreak has been linked to the Arizona State Fair petting zoo, with reports indicating that several children have fallen ill. At least four children have been hospitalized in Phoenix, Arizona, after interacting with animals, particularly pigs, at the fair. The outbreak has raised concerns among parents and health officials. A non-profit organization, Parker’s Promise, which supports families affected by such infections, reported that all hospitalized children had visited the petting zoo. The organization has been in contact with the families, who confirmed that their children had petted a pig at the zoo. Reports suggest that up to 8 children have been treated for E. coli infections in local hospitals.
The issue came to light when parents began reporting their children's illnesses following visits to the fair. As of November 20, the Arizona health department and state fair officials had not provided comments to Food Safety News. However, Jeanene Fowler, Executive Director of Maricopa County Health, confirmed to the Arizona Republic that an investigation is underway. The Arizona State Fair, which took place in Phoenix, concluded its month-long run in late October.
