Outbreak
Charenton, Louisiana, United States
The persistent issue of saltwater intrusion into the drinking water of South Louisiana has now reached the region of Acadiana. In response to this concerning development, the St. Mary Parish Water and Sewer Commission District No. 4 has issued an immediate Drinking Water Advisory, which encompasses the entire district, including residents of the Town of Baldwin. The primary cause of this advisory is the elevation of salt levels within the water system, originating from a saltwater intrusion phenomenon moving up the Charenton Drainage and Navigation Canal from West Cote Blanche Bay. Officials have confirmed that saltwater from West Cote Blanche Bay has made its way into the Charenton Canal, which serves as the main water source for the district.
While the Louisiana Department of Health has not issued a boil advisory, it does recommend that individuals receiving drinking water through Water & Sewer Commission No. 4, especially those on dialysis or with low-sodium diets, consult their healthcare providers regarding the levels of salt in their drinking water.
Authorities said the St. Mary Parish Water & Sewer Commission officials are actively monitoring the situation and investigating ways to lower the sodium and chloride levels.
