no masks. This includes the general public and even FedEx employees. The threat this poses to public safety in these days of COVID-19 is exacerbated by the fact that, unlike private shops and stores, visiting the Post Office is not optional in Silver Lake. This is the only way residents of Silver Lake can get their mail. Someone from every family has to visit the Post Office on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Thus, the possibility of the Post Office becoming a center of distribution for COVID-19 in Silver Lake is very real. Of special concern is the health of the two Post Office employees, who spend many hours in a relatively small, inside space with multiple members of the public passing through every day. This puts them at high risk of contracting COVID-19, especially if even some members of the public don't exhibit enough concern for them and their neighbors to wear a mask when in a communal building like the Post Office. Solving this problem should not be simply consigned to our local Post Office employees. They always wear masks and set good examples. It's the U.S. Post Office Administration that is responsible for solving this problem. Bigger signs and stricter enforcement are two of the tools that could be used, and there must be others. The U.S. Post Office is a highly revered and necessary part of our society and government, and it should do everything it can to ensure the safety of those who depend on it.
