Tesla, Inc. has announced a recall of its Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems due to potential fire and burn hazards. The recall affects approximately 10,500 units sold online and through certified installers across the United States from November 2020 to December 2022.HAZARD:
The lithium-ion cells in some Powerwall 2 units may fail during regular operation, potentially leading the system to shut down. This malfunction can create overheating and, in rare instances, smoke or fire, posing a serious risk of burns or other severe injuries.
AFFECTED PRODUCT:
- Certain Tesla Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power System
- The model number “Powerwall 2” is printed on the nameplate label on the side of the unit.
- The recall includes units with lithium-ion battery cells that may overheat, with incidents reported of smoking and fire.
The issue was identified following 22 reports of overheating, including six instances of smoking and five of fire, though no injuries have been reported. The recall was initiated on November 13, 2025.
