The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials are investigating three multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections linked to pet geckos. As of November 7, 2025, 101 people have fallen ill, with 27 hospitalizations reported across 33 states in the United States. The outbreak involves Salmonella germs, which geckos can carry in their droppings. These germs can spread to the geckos' bodies and their environments, posing a risk to humans who come into contact with them. The CDC has noted that 52 new cases and 18 new hospitalizations have been reported since the last update. The investigation remains open, and no recall has been issued at this time.
The problem was discovered through routine public health surveillance and reports of illness from affected individuals. Health officials are working to trace the source of the infections and are advising pet owners to practice good hygiene when handling geckos and their environments. This includes washing hands thoroughly after contact and keeping geckos and their supplies away from food preparation areas.
