Update November 5th, 2025:The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has issued a new update on the Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak linked to dog food and treats. The total number of confirmed illnesses remains 32, with cases reported in Alberta (14), British Columbia (15), Ontario (2), and the Northwest Territories (1). Eight hospitalizations have been reported, and no deaths.
PHAC announced an expanded recall for Puppy Love and Puppy World brand pet treats due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall now includes products such as:
- Puppy Love Beef Chew (4 pack)
- Puppy Love Chicken Breast (120g, 300g)
- Puppy Love Chicken Wing Tips (120g)
- Puppy World Lamb Lung (150g, 340g, 454g)
- Puppy Love “Jr Ribbon” beef treats (5 pack)
- Puppy Love Canadian Beef Curly treats (5 pack)
These products were sold between February and November 2025.
PHAC noted that additional contaminated products, including various Puppy Love beef treats, were also found positive for Salmonella. While exposure to these pet treats is considered a likely source of infection, a single common supplier has not yet been identified.
The investigation remains active, and officials caution that more illnesses may still be reported due to the delay between exposure and case confirmation.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed one additional case of Salmonella Oranienburg infection, bringing the total to 32 illnesses across Alberta (14), British Columbia (15), Ontario (2), and the Northwest Territories (1). Eight hospitalizations have been reported, with no deaths. PHAC announced a voluntary recall of certain Puppy Love and Puppy World brand pet treats after Salmonella was detected in multiple products, including beef, chicken, and lamb items sold between February and October 2025.
The investigation remains active, as officials continue to assess potential additional sources of contamination.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has provided an update on the ongoing Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak linked to dog food and treats, with 31 confirmed cases now reported. The most recent illnesses occurred between mid-February and late September 2025 across Alberta (14), British Columbia (14), Ontario (2), and the Northwest Territories (1). A total of seven people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.
PHAC has expanded its findings to include additional Puppy Love brand treats that tested positive for Salmonella. Newly identified products include:
- Puppy Love “Jr Ribbon” beef treats (Value pack, five pieces)
- Puppy Love Canadian Beef Curly treats (Value pack, five pieces)
- Puppy Love Beef Bully 12-inch treats (Value pack, five pieces)
- Puppy Love Beef Slim treats (Value pack, five pieces)
- Puppy Love “Jr Bully Mini” 4–5 inch beef treats (Value pack, ten pieces)
These findings add to previously identified contaminated items, such as Puppy World Lamb Lung and several Puppy Love chicken and beef treats, which have been linked to some of the illnesses.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has reported 31 confirmed cases of Salmonella Oranienburg linked to dog food and treats, up from 27 previously reported. Illnesses have now been identified in Alberta (14), British Columbia (14), Ontario (2), and the Northwest Territories (1). Seven people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.
Laboratory testing has detected Salmonella in several Puppy Love and Puppy World brand dog treats, which have been identified as likely sources for some of the illnesses. The products include:
- Puppy World Lamb Lung treats (120 g, 340 g, 545 g bags)
- Puppy Love Chicken Wing Tip treats (120 g bags)
- Puppy Love Chicken Breast treats (120 g and 300 g bags)
- Puppy Love Beef Chew 6-inch treats (Value pack, four pieces)
- Puppy Love “Twisty Jr.” beef treats (Value pack, five pieces)
The investigation remains active, and additional sources may be identified as testing continues.

September 15th, 2025:
A Salmonella outbreak linked to dog food and treats has resulted in 27 confirmed illnesses across Canada, with cases reported in Alberta (13), British Columbia (12), Ontario (1), and the Northwest Territories (1). The affected individuals range from infants to 87 years old, with 59% being female. Six people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
The outbreak, which is still under investigation, involves various types of dog food and treats, including kibble and dehydrated and freeze-dried products. The illnesses occurred between mid-February and mid-August 2025. Despite the ongoing investigation, a single common supplier has not yet been identified. The Public Health Agency of Canada is actively monitoring the situation and will update the public as new information becomes available.
The problem was discovered through laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella Oranienburg. Many of those affected reported handling dog food and treats before falling ill. The actual number of cases is likely higher, as not all individuals with mild symptoms seek medical attention or are tested.
