Public Health Declares Hepatitis A Outbreak in Los Angeles County, Los Angeles County, CA, United States

10 months ago source publichealth.lacounty.gov

California, United States

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has announced a community-wide outbreak of hepatitis A, with a significant increase in cases and elevated virus levels in local wastewater. In 2024, 165 cases were confirmed, a threefold increase from the previous year. So far in 2025, most of the 29 confirmed cases have been among individuals without travel or housing risk factors.

The outbreak has been linked to a rise in hepatitis A infections among people without risk factors, corresponding with the recent increase in virus concentrations in wastewater. While the risk to the general public remains low, community-wide protection actions are necessary to reduce the transmission of hepatitis A. Vaccination and good hygiene are the most effective preventative measures.

The problem was discovered through the monitoring of local wastewater and clinical cases. The ongoing increase in hepatitis A cases signals the need for immediate action to protect public health. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is working closely with healthcare providers and organizations serving homeless people to educate the community about the increase in hepatitis A, encourage vaccination, and recommend those with symptoms to seek medical care.

Hi! We're just sharing the public health alert so people are aware. Vaccination is recommended by health officials, especially for those at higher risk, but it's always your choice. Wishing you a good day! Best, Iwaspoisoned Support.
