CDC and state health officials are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak connected to pet bearded dragons. The outbreak has affected 11 states, resulting in 17 confirmed cases, 6 hospitalizations, and 1 death. The investigation remains open, and no recall has been issued.Bearded dragons can carry Salmonella bacteria in their droppings even when appearing healthy and clean. These germs easily spread to the reptile's body and surrounding environment. People can become infected by touching a bearded dragon or contaminated surfaces, then touching their mouth or food. Pet owners should always practice proper hygiene when handling bearded dragons to reduce the risk of illness.
The problem was discovered through routine surveillance by the CDC and state health departments, which identified a cluster of Salmonella cases with a common link to bearded dragons. Genetic testing of the bacteria from infected individuals confirmed the connection to the reptiles.
