Northern West Virginia residents in the northern part of Hancock County, specifically those residing, working, and attending school within the ten-mile Emergency Planning Zone of the Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport, PA, will soon have access to Potassium Iodide (KI) tablets as a precautionary measure against potential radiation exposure. Each individual will receive a two-day supply of these tablets, providing sufficient time for evacuation if necessary.According to the news, the primary purpose of distributing these tablets is to ensure that, in the event of a radiological emergency at the power station, individuals at risk of exposure can promptly consume the tablets immediately following radiation exposure.
Hancock County emphasizes that Potassium Iodide is a reliable and secure form of iodine that offers protection against radioiodine. Radioiodine, much like the iodine commonly found in table salt, is absorbed and stored in the thyroid gland. By saturating the thyroid, Potassium Iodide safeguards the gland, enabling radioactive iodine to be eliminated from the body through the kidneys.
