The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) issued a Nitrate Advisory for the City of Lucas public water supply system, in Russell County. This advisory is a precautionary measure due to ongoing system upgrades that are anticipated to extend over several weeks. The advisory has been in effect since May 28, 2024, and persists until the conditions leading to potential nitrate contamination are adequately addressed.
Customers are advised to adhere to the following precautions until further notice:
* Infants Safety: Refrain from giving tap water to infants under six months old. Consumption of water containing nitrate levels exceeding the maximum contaminant level (MCL) could lead to severe health complications, including fatality if left untreated. Instead, opt for bottled water or nitrate-low alternatives when preparing water, juice, or formula for infants in this age group.
* Avoid Boiling: Boiling tap water does not mitigate nitrate levels. In fact, boiling can concentrate nitrates as water evaporates, exacerbating the issue. Hence, boiling tap water is not recommended.
* Safe Consumption for Adults and Children: While nitrate poses a risk primarily to infants due to their limited capacity to process nitrates, tap water remains safe for consumption by adults and children over six months old. However, individuals with specific health concerns or pregnant women are advised to consult their healthcare provider.
* Bathing and Toilet Usage: Tap water can be safely used for bathing, although it's crucial to prevent water ingestion during bathing, especially for children. Additionally, tap water can be used for flushing toilets without concern.
For vulnerable populations such as infants under six months, pregnant women, and individuals identified as at-risk by healthcare providers, the City of Lucas is offering an alternate source of drinking water free of charge. This water can be obtained from the Home Oil and Service Convenience Store, located at 5499 Hwy 18. Residents are required to present a coupon from the City of Lucas, available at the Lucas Civic Center, 201 S. Main, to avail themselves of the bottled water.
It's important to note that only the KDHE has the authority to rescind the order following thorough testing at a certified laboratory, regardless of announcements made by the public water supplier or other entities.
