News Report
Kimballton, Iowa, United States
The City of Kimballton, situated in Audubon County, has issued a bottled water advisory to its 291 residents at least Aug. 1 due to elevated levels of manganese in the drinking water. The contamination is a result of ongoing construction work on an upgraded water treatment plant, leading to temporary water pollution. Measurements have shown manganese levels of 1.77 mg/L, exceeding the health advisory limit of 0.3 mg/L set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To ensure the safety of the residents, the EPA recommends refraining from consuming tap water with high manganese concentrations, especially for infants under six months old, as prolonged exposure could have adverse health effects.
The advisory advises residents to use bottled water or seek alternative sources for drinking, cooking, and oral hygiene purposes, while non-consumptive uses like bathing are not affected. It is important to note that boiling or filtering the water will not reduce manganese levels.
