A close friend of mine is a doctor and has expressed frustration with "how stupid our testing strategy is." I now have firsthand experience. Late last night I developed symptoms consistent with coronavirus: headache, cough, shortness of breath, elevated temperature. This morning I spoke to a series of hospital reps, culminating with my PCP's nurse. He told me my symptoms weren't extreme enough to meet the criteria for the test (I'm guessing this has to do with the availability of test kits and the general stress being put on hospitals).
He suggested instead I self-isolate, drink a lot of liquid, take tylenol and mucinex, and check back in if the symptoms get worse. It's remarkable how unprepared this country is, still.
