Las Vegas, and California's Central Valley. However, the most extreme conditions are expected in Death Valley, where temperatures might exceed an astounding 130 degrees Fahrenheit. A coast-to-coast heat dome has blanketed vast portions of the western and southern United States, enveloping states from Washington to New Mexico and extending from Arizona and California to Texas and Florida. Over 100 million people find themselves within the grip of this oppressive heat, which has prompted excessive-heat watches, warnings, and heat advisories in 15 states.

The arrival of this heat dome poses significant challenges and concerns for the affected regions. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can result in heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and those without access to adequate cooling resources. Additionally, the intense heat increases the risk of wildfires, which can spread rapidly and devastate communities.

Here are some recommendations to follow during heat advisories:
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or sugary drinks.
- Stay indoors: Seek shelter in cool, air-conditioned spaces during the hottest hours.
- Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colors.
- Limit physical activity: Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

More than 800 reports of severe weather were received by the Storm Prediction Center between Wednesday and Thursday alone. A deadly tornado rated EF3 on the 0 to 5 Enhanced Fujita scale occurred in the town of Perryton, located in the Texas Panhandle, while hail approximately 6 inches in diameter.

The National Weather Service is calling for “widespread record to near-record daytime heat with temperatures into the 100 degrees” with heat indexes up to 120 the next several days. A few spots could set heat records for the entire month of June.

is expected to reach 105 to 108 degrees.

The weather service extended the initial advisory from Wednesday evening out to Friday given the stretch of hot days ahead. If you live in Southeast Florida and portions of Southwest Florida, such as Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach counties, and Fort Myers, Immokalee, Naples, Everglades City and Arcadia, you’re in the advisory zone where the heat index will be at least 105 and could go up to 108 degrees.

The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature, according to the weather service. This is how hot it “feels like” on your skin on steamy days. The weather service will initiate alert procedures when the heat index is expected to exceed 105 to 110 degrees depending on local climate for at least two consecutive days.
