Viva Raw, a pet food company, has voluntarily recalled several of its duck products due to potential contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products, which include Viva Duck for Dogs (Ground), Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked), Viva Duck for Cats, and Viva Pure Duck, were... See More distributed between October 24 and December 6, 2023. There was 1 consumer complaint made to the FDA about this lot.

The recalled products are identifiable by their lot number, 22853, and are packaged as frozen 1 lb bricks in clear vacuum packaging. The products from this lot were shipped to 1,500+ customers, according to the company. The FDA discovered the contamination following a consumer complaint and subsequent testing of the Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked) product from the aforementioned lot.

These bacteria can affect both animals consuming the products and humans who handle the contaminated pet products. Pets with Salmonella and Listeria infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

The company advises consumers to check their freezer for any remaining products of Lot 22853. In case there are remaining products, they can contact the company to request a refund.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is collaborating with provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada to investigate an extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Salmonella outbreak linked to raw pet food and contact with cattl . As of November 11, 2023 there are... See More 40 confirmed cases of XDR Salmonella illness in 6 provinces: Manitoba (1), Ontario (14), Quebec (21), New Brunswick (1), Nova Scotia (2), and Prince Edward Island (1). 13 individuals have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported. Individuals became sick between July 2020 and September 2023. This investigation is ongoing.

Based on the investigation findings to date, two sources have been identified:
- Exposure to raw meat prepared for pets (raw pet food) has been identified as a likely source for some of the illnesses reported in this outbreak. Some of the individuals who became sick reported exposure to raw pet food, or to dogs fed raw pet food, before their illnesses occurred. A single common supplier of raw pet food has not been identified.
- Contact with cattle, particularly calves, has also been identified as a likely source for some of the illnesses reported in the outbreak.

The outbreak was initially detected due to an increase in reports of extensively drug-resistant Salmonella illnesses across multiple jurisdictions in Canada. Laboratory methods identified that certain Salmonella cases traced back to 2020 shared the same strain with those reported in 2023.

The Salmonella strain in this outbreak is resistant to a broad range of antibiotics, making treatment particularly challenging if deemed necessary. It's crucial for individuals who suspect they have symptoms of Salmonella infection to contact their healthcare provider.

Salmonella bacteria can be found in raw pet food and in many species of animals, including dogs and cattle. Always use safe food handling practices when preparing, cooking, or storing raw pet food to prevent illness. Practice good hand hygiene and frequent handwashing after contact with dogs fed raw pet food, cattle, and their environments. The outbreak strain of Salmonella that made people sick has been found in raw pet food from the home of an ill individual. If contaminated, raw pet food can also make your pets sick. Infected pets can also spread bacteria, like Salmonella, to individuals they are in contact with, even if they do not show any signs of illness. This outbreak strain of Salmonella has also been found in sick dogs and cattle, and some of these animals have died

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

Pet foods contaminated with Salmonella are of particular public health importance because they can affect both human and animal health. Pets can get sick from Salmonella and may also be carriers of the bacteria and pass it on to their human companions without appearing to be ill. People who think their pets have become ill after consuming contaminated pet food should first contact their veterinarians.

Because these products are sold and stored frozen, the FDA is concerned that people may still have them in their possession and feed them to their pets. If you have the affected products stop feeding them to your pets and throw them away in a secure container where other animals, including wildlife, cannot access them.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

On March 1, 2024, Sleepnet Corporation initiated a worldwide recall for all CPAP and BIPAP masks with magnets due to potential interference with certain medical devices. See More the position of the implant, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. This applies to you or anyone in close physical contact with your mask.

If a patient, or anyone in close physical contact, has an active medical implant or metallic implant, they should contact their mask supplier to find a replacement mask that does not include magnets. If the patient is unsure whether or not they should use the mask, they should consult their physician or the manufacturer of their implant.
